Final Illustration Project

For the illustration project, the intended audience of my piece was little kids around the age of six to ten who are learning how to play volleyball. I am trying to communicate with my age group how to properly and efficiently pass a volleyball. I attempt to do this in the simplest, yet effective way possible by providing a few, easy to understand words. These kids have two goals: they are eager to learn how to play volleyball and want to learn the proper way to play the game. They are good listeners and are trying their best to understand the technique associated with the game.

Moving on, I chose similar images from Canva to accurately convey each step in the most simplistic way possible in order to make it easy to understand for my general audience. I also chose pictures associated with volleyball sticking with my theme and overall goal for the project. I chose bright colors to capture my audience’s attention and kept a simple pattern so as to not overwhelm the kids. I also implemented different numbers from Canva in order to accurately represent each step. I used clear arrows to help indicate where the kids should direct their attention, intentionally sticking to my theme of simplicity. Each step accurately has a proper image and wording in order to establish my goal of teaching children how to pass. I then created a volleyball logo using illustrator by using the star and ellipse tool and creating a text box. I then exported my logo from illustrator into Canva.

For my illustration project, I used both illustrator and Canva to establish my finished product. First, I downloaded a template on Canva to create the general parameters for my project. Then I erased a majority of the images and wording that was on the Canva template. I then created a heading and individual text boxes for each step in a simple text and dark blue color on Canva. Next, I found similar images to keep a simplistic theme. I lined up the pictures with their designated steps and text boxes. I also then established a blue and orange color scheme to maintain a theme throughout my piece. Continuing on, I went to illustrator and created a logo. I then transported the illustrator logo to Canva and lined them up with their designated steps. Then on Canva, I went to the elements tab and picked the circle creating a background for my numbers. Finally, I added arrows from the elements tab as well.

Throughout this project, I learned how easy it is to create your own patterns and shapes on illustrator and how to challenge the dimensions of lines on this app as well. I also discovered how simple and effective Canva is to use and create particular posters for future reference. For design, I began to understand how easy it is to create a theme from a choice of many colors and patterns and how to make things match. I also learned that I really enjoy making posters and tutorials as I feel they are easier for me to manipulate and create to my liking. One major skill I also learned is revision as I managed to fix my beginning drafts into my finished product. From my first draft, it was not organized and seemed quite cluttered. There also was way too much going on, so I resorted to Canva to establish a cleaner outline and better organization tactics. I then found better images to use and created a sense of uniformity throughout my finished project. Overall, I discovered numerous things throughout this illustration project and most importantly, the skill of revision.

Finally, for my next project, I will time out my rough draft outline better and give myself more time to establish my idea. I feel like I really rushed into this project due to the shorter time period and did not give myself a lot of room to expand on my concept. Contrary, I will put aside a lot of time like I did for this illustration on the next project as it allowed me to actually create a finished product I enjoyed. In conclusion, I had a fun time doing this illustration project and appreciate the new skills I have obtained as a result.
